Despite the savings budget – the police will seize 2500 new employees this year

Date:

Saving plans for the police recently caused excitement. Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner emphasizes that the savings should not be saved despite the savings budget. On the contrary: 2500 new employees will be admitted this year.

Due to the constitutional requirements, all ministries currently have an automatic budget provision (transition budget). Negotiations for a double budget 2025/2026 with the Ministry of Finance have currently started. But that will only be done in April. Until time, the departments may only spend as much as in the previous year. That is why the Viennese police ordered restrictions on overtime.

32,619 Servant Executive Service
The Ministry emphasizes that this is the reason why it is not generally stored in the executive. The current staff of the Ministry of the Interior, including the police of the State Police, State Protection Management and the Federal Office Forest Affairs and Asylum, was 1 to 40,393 employees, 32,619 Executive Service. In the past two years, 4410 police officers have been included in basic training – a record value. About 2500 recordings were planned by the police for 2025 and nearly 400 recordings took place in March.

Three quarters of the costs are for staff
In 2024, the Ministry of the Interior had a budget of 4.6 billion euros, which corresponds to around 3.3 percent of the general federal budget – moreover, there is the budget for the foreign system of around 800 million euros. Three of the four billion are personnel costs for a total of 40,000 employees, of which around 32,000 uniformed police officers. A billion is topics. The actual effort includes rental prices for around 1200 agencies on around 850 objects in Austria, vehicles (6800), equipment and uniformation, IT statements, but also equipment, ammunition, business trips, office supplies, fairs and special projects.

A savings pact is first compiled
The government’s raw savings plan stipulates that all ministries must save 15 percent of their material expenses (a total of 1.1 billion). Chancellor Christian Stocker recently said that the division can be weighed differently and that some ministries should save more than others.

In the previous year, the police worked 5.7 million overtime. These are often unavoidable because many events take place without or just a short lead time. For example, demonstrations only have to be displayed for 48 hours before they hold.
