The German Bundeswehr is more favorable to recruit volunteers than a return to military service. Movor Service can also become more attractive due to higher salaries, said Panu Poutvaara of the Munich IFO Institute, which had conducted the study.
A reintroduction of the currently exposed military service could increase the number of soldiers by 195,000. At the same time, this would cause government spending of around 3.2 billion euros and economic costs of 17.1 billion euros per year.
In the case of higher salaries for military service at a level of the private sector, government spending would be considerably higher by 7.7 billion euros, the IFO Institute said on Thursday. The economic costs would be considerably lower at 9.4 billion euros.
What went to the calculations
For example, it was taken into account that many young people with employment would only pursue without profitable work than without. The extra government spending, in turn, results in a monthly net salary of conscripts of 1000 euros. This would be around 42 percent of the standard market salary, which is based on a voluntary basis for a solution.
However, current service models assume considerably fewer service providers than before. The mandatory military service was suspended in Germany in 2011, the voluntary service lasts between seven and 23 months. Shortly before her break at the end of the previous year, the traffic light government had announced that it would write to young men and women to ask them about their willingness to serve the Bundeswehr. In this way, more young people must also be recruited.
