After several announcements, nails are now being made with their heads: US President Donald Trump has actually officially signed a decree to destroy the Ministry of Education during a ceremony.
In the election campaign, the Republican had brown with it, now it is bitter: offering the plans to decentralize the education system and transfer the ministry’s powers to the individual states.
It was the start of his aim to eliminate the “once and for all” department, the Republican said during a party in the White House. In the document he signed, Minister of Education Linda McMahon gives all the necessary steps to reduce the functions of the Ministry to a minimum.
To completely abolish the department, the consent of the congress is necessary. The ministry should only have minimal functions, such as the allocation of trade fairs and certain financial assistance, the spokeswoman for the White House, Karoline Leavitt, had previously explained. The 78-year-old now stated that corresponding programs should be distributed among others and that they would take care of it.
Masses of decisions
Only a week ago, the government had released almost half of the ministry’s employees.
Traditionally, the US government has a limited influence on education. Only about 13 percent of funds for primary schools and secondary schools come from federal funds, the rest is funded by the states and local communities. However, the federal funds are existentially important for schools with a low budget and for students with special needs.
