The Israeli government has expressed itself for the resignation of General Public Prosecutor Gali Baharav-Maara. The ministers unanimously approved the controversial step on Sunday – the reason was lacking. Resistance is formed in Jerusalem: thousands of demonstrating against dismissal.
The decision to dismiss Baharav-Meara is the start of a longer process. A special committee will now continue to treat the subject. The reason for the dismissal of the Attorney General was therefore the publication of a letter in which it was said: “The government wants to be above law, we will not be deterred.” The government wants to demand the loyalty of legal experts at the political top.
During the government meeting, thousands of Israelis show against the dismissal of the attorney general:
The government regards the general public prosecutor in general as uncomfortable, because they repeatedly oppose decisions of political leadership, which does not consider this to be legally. This is precisely the task of the most important guardian of the rule of law: the government has advised so that it acts as part of the law.
Heavy blow to democracy
Law experts in Israel have already warned that the resignation of Baharav-Maarara would endanger the democracy of the country. Seven of their predecessors warned in a letter to the office and its independence.
The judicial system has long been a thorn in the side of the right -wing conservative head of the Benjamin Netanyahu government. The accusation of the Israeli government: it is too powerful and mixed in the decisions of the executive power. A judicial conversion meant by his government had led to mass protests and warnings for the destruction of the democratic balance in the country in the past.
