The Caukasus Republic of Armenia, which is previously traditionally connected to Russia, would join the will of its parliament of the European Union. With a large majority, the MPs voted for a law with which the government is asked to start the accession process.
The Kleine Caukasus republic was part of the Soviet Union until 1991 and since then with Russia. Armenia, however, felt abandoned by Moscow after Russia had not intervened in September 2023 with a view to a military offensive in Azerbaijani in the Armenian region of Bergkarabach. Azerbaijan eventually fully brought Bergkarabach under his control.
Against the background of another possible threat from the neighboring country, Armenia has increasingly changed to the West since then. The frozen membership of the government of the military alliance organization of the collective security contract dominated by Russia and signed a security agreement with Washington.
EU committee wants to accept an application for membership
Until now, no EU member of the EU has publicly supported Armenia. The Commissioner Marta Kos, responsible for extensions, said at the start of the year that Brussels “would accept the application for accession when he was submitted”.
