US President Donald Trump caused a stir with new statements about deportation practice: in certain cases he would also show American citizens-if they have committed particularly violent crimes. The purpose of these measures would include El Salvador, where the affected people are locked up in the context of a bilateral agreement.
“We always have to keep the laws, but we have local criminals who push people for subways or attack older women with baseball rackets. These are monsters,” Trump said Monday. “I would like to lock them up in the group of those we want to leave the country. But you have to look at the laws.”
The background is a controversial agreement with El Salvador, in the context of which the United States has already brought hundreds of suspected criminal migrants – especially from Venezuela – to a newly built prison with high security (Cecot).
For detention, the US government pays the middle -American country six million dollars (around 5.29 million euros). Especially explosive: there is also a man among the deported people whose return clearly fermented.
Trump “Loves” idea of deportation of his own citizen
Last week Trump explained that he “loving” the idea of deporting American citizens to El Salvador. The statement was followed by an offer from the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele to accept American prisoners as part of the collaboration. Civil rights activists and constitutional lawyers reacted alarms. They point out that deportation of people born in the US would violate the Constitution. However, Trump’s new statements suggest that he is following this idea seriously.
A concrete matter causes extra criticism: in March asylum seeking Kilmar Abrego Garcia was arrested in March by the American authorities despite the existing protection against deportation and exhausted according to El Salvador. According to Trump and Bukele, it is not the intention to bring the man back to the United States – although the United States Supreme Court has ordered the return.
BUKELE rejects the return – despite the court’s decision
During a meeting with Trump in Washington, Bukele said he saw no way to bring Abarmo Garcia back to the US: “Do I have to smuggle it?” He also rejected a release in El Salvador: he was not ready to let ‘terrorists’ run around in his own country.
Abrego Garcia entered the US in 2012 and applied for asylum. Although the application was rejected in 2019, the US authorities granted him deportation protection for imminent prosecution. The government of Trump has now admitted an “administrative error” in the deportation, but states that he was a member of the criminal gang MS-13-A accusation that Abrego Garcia denies.
According to the US government, Abrego Garcia is still in custody in El Salvador and is “alive and safe”. So far she has not given any information about specific steps to his return.
