Before the coalition agreement for a new government signs, argue about the statutory minimum wage in Germany. CDU Secretary -General Carsten Linnemann excludes a “political minimum wage” and therefore rejects statements from SPD Secretary General Matthias Miersch.
Linnemann said the newspapers of the Bavarian Media Group: “I understand the pressure that the SPD has through the membership investigation. But we still have to adhere to the coalition agreement.”
15 euro minimum wage
The point is how quickly the minimum wage can rise from the current 12.82 euros to 15 euros per hour, as the Social Democrats would like. In Germany, an independent committee of employer and employee representatives actually decides the amount of the minimum wage.
A minimum wage of 15 euros can be achieved, Linnemann said, but the minimum Wage Commission will ultimately decide whether it will actually happen. “Political minimum wage that are determined in the Bundestag Plenaire Hall are excluded. The negotiators know that too,” said Linnemann.
Miersch had threatened politics with the determination of the minimum wage if the responsible committee deviates from its criteria and therefore would not recommend an increase to 15 euros next year. “I assume that this committee will actually come up with this result (from 15 euros),” said Miersch in the podcast “Table. Briefings”. “But in other cases we have already proven that if this committee does not act accordingly, for example, that we can act legally,” Miersch added.
SPD membership research on the coalition agreement
He referred to 2022 when the “traffic light” government at the time of the SPD, Greens and FDP did not increase the minimum wage to twelve euros on October 1, 2022. This had caused enormous criticism from the economy. From the start, however, all three coalition partners agreed.
There is currently still a member investigation in the SPD about the draft contract that the CDU, CSU and SPD had presented on 9 April. Only if the SPD party basis agrees can the contract be signed and CDU Baas Friedrich Merz is chosen as Chancellor in the Bundestag on 6 May. The CSU has already approved the contract by the decision of the board and the CDU will decide on April 28, a so -called small party congress that is considered a matter of form. The result of the SPD mood is expected before April 30.
