Trafficking crime has increased significantly in the first six months of this year, and with it the number of people who have illegally fled the country and are being detained: “We are currently registering 200 to 400 arrests per day,” said Gerald Tatzgern, head of the department Combating human trafficking at the Federal Criminal Police Office “Research” with Gerhard Koller.
The methods of smuggling are now becoming more brutal – recently people were found in trucks that had to be placed in the side of the tanks, the lids were then put on and screwed on from the outside. “The refugees have no chance of getting out of these tanks on their own. If the truck stands still for days or if the refugees are forgotten, there is an immediate danger to life,” says Tatzgern.
Refugees are often placed directly on top of the load under the shortened truck roof tarpaulins. The drivers often knew nothing about the people in the vehicle. There have also recently been clashes between gangs of people smugglers on the Serbian-Hungarian border, while the areas are being defended.
Exciting information about the methods used by the police to track down the people smugglers or the feared increase in the influx of refugees from Africa can be seen in the video above.
