After the rampage in Graz: – Greens now want to limit the possession of weapons enormously

Date:

Greens Baas Werner Kogler again argued for a reason for a fundamental reversal in the case of possession of weapons after the murder of a Graz school. “It requires freedom of weapons, no freedom for weapons,” said Kogler in the ORF “Press Hour”. The greens are the only ones who would have insisted on it for a while.

If it is after the greens, private weapons possession must be “massively limited”, “with some justified exceptions such as hunters or sports shooters,” as Kogler explained.

In general, one must get away “that there is such a thing as an omnipresent claim for weapons”. One has to get away from this “demanding thinking”, because “more weapons no longer create security, usually more uncertainty”. After all, “much, much more violence would be practiced than prevent,” said Kogler, “So the principle is wrong in the back and front.”

With this vision, Kogler only thinks the Greens
With this position, Kogler currently sees the Greens in the hallway. “We have always worked on tightening.” For example, after the terrible terrorist attack in Vienna in 2020, both in terms of provisions of criminal law, as well as for weapons or suitability requirements at the insistence of the Greens, the Kogler said. The state security, for example, had more opportunities in connection with extremists. “That was once a step forward.” But also with violence in the private sector: “Some things were successful”, Kogler referred to a weapon ban with a simultaneous ban or access ban.

Because everything should have been expanded, it would have gone to the greens, Kogler emphasized. “Of course we brought in a lot more.” Kogler does not only want to blame the coalition partner ÖVP, because the other parties in the National Council would not have given up. “Those who have suggested tensioning in all these areas, even if they want to endure detailed, are the greens,” Kogler emphasized.

A number of measures required
The greens had “always” pushed to higher age limits and that no weapons could be purchased without psychological tests. Moreover, these tests should also be carried out regularly and not only by a psychologist, at least a principle of four eyes is required. But more needs to be done in the “interception of these phenomena”, for example through psychological care or prevention in schools. Social questions and answers are “at least as important as the issue of weapons”.

“Unsocial media”
Safety locks are “often” skeptically “tends to” skeptical. Schools must “remain open houses”, he argued: “It can’t look like the court.” A thorn in the side are Kogler who – as he calls it – “Unsocial Media”. Young people would have been radicalized there, for example via Tikkok. “That’s unbearable.” Here were the existing funds such as the Digital Services Act “focused”.
