The EU parliament has now surprisingly voted for a new regulation to protect cats and dogs. Purpose: infect the illegal trade in animals, improves breeding conditions and strengthen traceability. An important step for animal lovers throughout Europe – with sometimes far -reaching consequences.
In the center of the new measures is the mandatory labeling and registration of all traded dogs and cats. In the future, only animals must be sold whose origin is clearly understandable – a big step in the direction of transparency. Especially important: even animals that are introduced in the EU from the third party countries must already be demolished when entering and entering a national register.
The planned regulation is an answer to a complaint that has been known for years, but has so far had hardly any consequences: many four -legged friends come from illegal breeding, are kept under miserable circumstances, separated from the mother too early and often sick or traumatized. The parliament now wants to finally put an end.
Hobby breeding is excluded
MPs call for uniform minimum standards throughout Europe to continue breeding breeding animals. These may not apply to private individuals or farmers, but only for commercial breeding facilities – but with a decisive limitation: only breeders with a maximum of two nests per year will be excluded in the future.
Dubious optics
Moreover, the parliament wants to prevent the pain. This influences the mating between narrow family members or the breeding of extreme external characteristics such as plate noses or exceeding to jeopardize animal welfare. The sale of dogs and cats through pet stores must also be prohibited about the EU-A ban that is already applicable in Austria, but has been missing throughout Europe so far.
Chip obligation according to the transition phase
The road to the now concluded measures was not conflict -free. Before coordination in the plenum, countless changes were discussed – some of them had the goal of weakening the central points of the regulations. The question was particularly controversial whether all cats should also be mandatory. For “crown” Animal Corner Maggie Duckfellner particularly satisfying: “It is planned that all cats have to be registered after a period of ten years and all dogs have to be registered after five years.”
Waiting position
However, the law is not yet in force. In the coming months, the SO -driven trilogue negotiations between parliament, the council and the committee will be dealing with. It will be demonstrated there whether the ambitious suggestions can also be found in the last text – or to be softened again.
For Europe’s animals, their owners and for all who no longer want to accept that they are suffering – the direction is clear: more transparency, more control and an end of anonymous trade in living beings.
