Hot and always hot – alarm level red: experts warn the government

Date:

As expected, the summer brings heat records. The climate problem is becoming increasingly urgent. Science states: “The politicians have still not understood the problem.”

It will be hot and hotter, especially this week this was noticeable in the city and the country. In the future, 40 degrees in the summer should no longer be the exception, scientists such as the styic geophysicist Gottfried Kirchengast: “If we continue for decades, we can threaten up to 50 degrees.”

The EU has given the goal to drastically reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases in 2040. From 2036 a maximum of three percent of the values from the nineties must be compensated, in 2050 they want to become climate neutral. The ambitious goal is set on 2040 in the government program of ÖVP, Spö and Neos. You weaken now.

You have to be flexible in different areas, ÖVP climate minister Norbert Tettschnig said on Ö1. 2040 is not the duty, but the freestyle. You must adhere to the EU requirements. After all, the economy must remain competitive.

“Politics has still not understood”
This causes indignation in expert groups. Climate researcher and “Kroon” columnist Helga Kromp-Kolb finds clear words: “The politicians have still not understood the urgency. Austria is absolutely not on the way.” If you get on the brakes in climate protection, you will not secure competitiveness, “but gamble this away”.

In general, the professor states that politics will certainly not define goals. “You can’t reach them like that either. I place aimlessness instead of flexibility.” In general you get the impression that the climate problem is not really high on the list of priorities despite almost daily.

“Move the problem”
Helga Kromp-Kolb refers to already reasonable plans from the parties. “However, they have disappeared in a store. There is no climate advice either.

The rise of the EU now offers: anyone who causes more emissions than prescribed in the future must buy pollution rights. Those who produce more climate -friends can sell excess certificates on the market or take them to the next period. Now this is being negotiated. ÖVP Minister Totschnig sees the concept positive. Regardless of the outcome, Kromp-Kolb is certainly for climate researchers: “The intention of the EU is good. But I am afraid it will only move the basic problem.”
