Despite the recent customs threats from Donald Trump, the EU wants to continue to rely on diplomacy. Brussels wants to wait until 1 August before 1 August, as the Head of Ursula von der Leyen Committee announced on Sunday with countermeasures for the 30 percent rates announced by the US president on Saturday.
In fact, countermeasures from the EU would be planned for the amount of 21 Miliaros -euros for next Monday, also against the current criminal taxes of the US government on EU products.
Dangerous escalation spiral for world trade
In a published letter to Von der Leyen, Trump threatened to increase further customs in the case of countermeasures. At the same time, he wrote: If the EU is ready to open and eliminated its previously closed trade markets for the United States, it can be considered to adapt to the letter. Depending on the development of relationships, the rates can be adjusted or down.
The new dials of 30 percent therefore apply to all goods that the EU wants to introduce to the United States. This does not apply to certain industries in which Trump requires even higher. When asked whether imports for certain product groups such as cars, steel and aluminum is excluded, the White House announced at the request of the German news agency: “correct, sectoral rates are treated separately and not cumulative.” Until now, the United States has shown imported EU cars and parts with a duty of 25 percent and 50 percent for steel and aluminum import.
No uniform line within the EU
Weekly negotiations with the important trading partners about a more extensive agreement had previously not been successful. The EU had hoped for a broad agreement with the US, but had already prepared for new taxes. After the difficult conversations, there was a realization that you should probably be satisfied with a transition agreement. There are also conflicting interests in the circle of 27 Member States. While the economically strong Germany encouraged a rapid agreement to protect its industry, other members such as France warned against giving a one -sided agreement on American conditions.
