System reform planned – British government wants to reduce election age to 16

Date:

The democratic system in Great Britain must be revised. The rules for political donations must be tightened and the election age for all votes is reduced to 16 years. Bank cards and digital ID formats must be sufficient as proof of identity when voting.

“We are taking measures to reduce obstacles to participation and to ensure that more people get the chance to get involved in British democracy,” said Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.

Vote turnout shrinks
With the plans that still have to be approved by parliament, the right to vote would be adapted to that of Scotland and Wales, where younger voters are already participating in the elections of the regional parliaments. The rise in the parliamentary elections of 2024 was 59.7 percent the lowest since 2001.

Controls of articles of more than £ 500
To combat foreign interference, the rules for political donations must also be tightened. This includes checks of articles of more than £ 500 (577 euros) non -registered associations and the closure of meshes for mailbox companies.
