The British Matthew Hudson-Smith reaffirmed in Munich the mainland crown of 400 meter dash achieved four years ago in Berlin after a race in which he showed his superiority by entering the finish line alone with a difference of several meters from his rivals and returned his smile after a period where he even thought of committing suicide.
Hudsonbronze medalist at the recent World Cup in Eugene, stopped the clock at the Munich Olympic Stadium in 44.53a score lower than the Swiss’s 45.03 Ricky Petrucciani second, and in 45.17 of his compatriot Alex Haydock.
This victory brings back a smile to Matthew Hudson-Smith after a difficult few years. In 2019 he ruptured his Achilles tendon, in 2020 came the covid-19 pandemic and later his coach Lloyd Cowan, aged 58, and his physiotherapist Neil Black, aged 60, died.
These losses, along with the denial of a work visa to the United States when he considered changing countries to train, plunged him into a period of depression that, as he publicly acknowledged, led him to to think about suicide.
The bronze medal at the recent World Cup in Eugene and this gold at the European Championships in Munich bring a smile back to the British sprinter, who, at the age of 27, is still the European king of 400 meters.
