The Munich European will have a busy penultimate day with many medal options for Spanish athletics. In the morning, the final road test will be held on the streets of central Munich, the 20 km walk (men at 8:30 am; women at 10:15 am). Spain will appear with the two current continental champions at Berlin 2018, Álvaro Martín and María Pérez, who will come to the event at their best moment of the year and have serious options to defend their titles. They are joined by three other walkers in the men’s category, Diego García Carrera, silver in Berlin 2018, Alberto Amezcua and Iván López.
In the afternoon, the medal choices will fall on the 4×400 relay, mainly men’s (9:15 pm), which went into the final with the best record among all the countries. Spain can boast of having a good wardrobe in this event and in the men’s relay it can have numbers with proven results. Óscar Husillos, Lucas Búa, Manuel Guijarro, Samuel García and Iñaki Cañal. The men’s 4×400 won bronze four years ago with Husillos, Búa, Samuel and Bruno Hortelano (absent in Munich). The women’s relay, meanwhile, will appear with nothing to lose and has relievers with a lot of future potential, Berta Segura, Laura Hernández, Carmen Avilés, Eva Santidrián and the veteran Auri Lorena Bokesa.
In the final of the women’s 3,000 obstacles (10:13 pm) there will also be Spanish representation with Carolina Robles and Irene Sánchez-Escribano. The two are not starting favorites, from the beginning, but they will face the final with no one to lose.
At 8:05 pm the pole vault final begins with the clear favorite, world record holder and Olympic champion Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis. The Swedish genius will participate in Munich after becoming World Champion in Oregon with a world record of 6.21m. With no rival to match him, the big attraction of the final will be to see if he is capable of continuing to extend his own record. The weather will not be easy for them as it is expected to rain during the competition.
