CD Estepona took over the vacancy on which the ‘new’ Extremadura also bid
Águilas FC will not play in the Second RFEF next season. The club chaired by Alfonso García has decided not to bid for the third term, worth €512,149.95, forfeiting Extremadura’s chance to keep Extremadura’s vacancy in Group V. Finally, the place will be taken by Club Deportivo Estepona, an Andalusian group that would play in the Third Division.
The reason for not bidding in this third installment was the doubt of the owner of the club. Alfonso García did not see it feasible to pay half a million euros to play in a group where Águilas would be the club in all Spanish football that would cover the most kilometers in the season, almost 22,000, traveling by road to the municipality of Extremadura , flights to the island of La Palma and Melilla, and with the journey to Socuéllamos as the closest journey.
García considered bidding when the fourth auction deadline was reached, valued at just over €250,000. He assured that money was not an issue, but that he could not regularly follow the day-to-day running of the club as the schedule was disrupted during the week due to long trips every two weeks. However, this extreme has not been reached and the team led by Sebas López will play in Group XIII of the Third Division, starting as favorites for promotion. The aquiline businessman, who usually doesn’t miss games both at home and away, would have a very hard time traveling home and combining it with his business had he stayed near the square.
The RFEF has officially announced through its website that the vacancy will finally be filled by CD Estepona. CD Extremadura 1924 also made an offer, a team that emerges without debts after the disappearance of the team that left the vacancy and that will eventually play in the Second Extremeña. Once the intention to take the place before Thursday has been presented and the requested money has been deposited before the end of Friday, the Federation has studied and verified that there is no anomaly in Estepona’s request and it will be the one who will take the place preserved, with a better sporting merit than Extremadura 1924.
