Ogura suppresses the threat of rebellion

Date:

The Japanese rider withstood the attacks of his teammate, Somkiat Chantra, and the win in Austria makes him the leader of Moto2, a category in which Pedro Acosta returned and hit the podium

What appeared to be a few quiet final laps in the Idemitsu Team Honda box, with the two riders leading the Moto2 race alone, turned into suspense as rebel Somkiat Chantra attacked on the final lap. The Thai was not content with being a mere squire for Ai Ogura, the pilot competing for the intermediate category title, and even tried twice.

However, the Japanese did not lose his composure and returned two overtakes at the time. This win was the icing on the cake of an impeccable weekend. Ogura was already the fastest on Saturday and started from pole. He practically led the race from start to finish and victory in the race also came with a juicy prize under his arm as he led the Moto2 standings.

Ogura outperformed Balearic rider Augusto Fernández in the table, who suffered throughout the race. He started third, but from the opening laps it was clear that he was not going as well as in the last three races he had won. He also did not use his strong point that he usually shows at the end of the race and had to settle for fifth position, which he took for granted given the circumstances.

Pedro Acosta didn’t end so happily, stroking the podium with his fingertips. The Murcian driver had missed the last two races due to an injury and this weekend he was still dragging the effects of that fracture to his left thigh. What limited him most, however, was not so much the pain, but the lack of rhythm. “Looks like we weren’t that bad. I’ve been on pills all weekend, I’ve got it, but with 12 laps to go I didn’t think there would be so much race left. At the last overtake, with more hours on the bike, things could have gone differently. Briton Jake Dixon took advantage of Acosta’s weakness to take the podium from him in the final corner of the race. More opportunities are coming for the shark of Mazarrón.

Ogura is the leader with only one rental point above Augusto. Both remain alone in the front, as Vietti’s fall has already left him more than one race (27 points) behind. It was also not a good Sunday for Arón Canet, who started far behind the grid and could only finish sixth. He is fourth, 46 points behind.
