Croatian Borna Coric, world number 152, became the lowest-ranked player on Sunday to win the Masters 1,000 in Cincinnati, defeating Greek Stefanos Tsitsips in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2.
Only Romanian Andrei Pavlev, who was a finalist in Paris in 2003 as world number 191, has reached the final act of a 1,000 tournament with a lower ranking than Coric.
Entering the Cincinnati main draw with a protected ranking, Coric is playing tennis at the highest level and at the Lindner Family Tennis Center he eliminated Spaniards Rafa Nadal and Roberto Bautista, Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime, British Cameron Norrie and Tsitsipas.
Coric, a very talented player who became number 12 in the world in 2018, with this victory in the final was placed in the twenty-ninth position of the ATP ranking.
