European balance: Spain climbs to the podium of the medal table

Date:

Spain closed the European Athletics Championships in Munich with ten medals (four gold, three silver and three bronze), placing the National Team in third overall position in the medal table, surpassed only by powers with a long tradition such as Germany or Great Britain. The Spaniards are not the winners of the most medals by number (in this classification they are fifth), but the achievements of Mariano Garcia (800), asier martinez (110 hurdles), Alvaro Martin (20 km walk) and Miguel Angel Lopez (35 km march) was allowed to climb the final table. Some historical powers like France did not achieve any gold in the entire European Championship and others, winners of Tokyo 2020 like Italy, were left with three. Also noteworthy are the four gold medals won by the Netherlands, three of which were made by the Quattrocento Femke Bowl.

“The balance is very positive. Besides the medals, we got seven fourth places, which is worth considering. And I also want to remember all the top-level people who have never been here Orlando Ortega, Ana Peleteiro, Esther Guerrero, and Carlos Mayo. and several more”, analyzed the Spanish coach Jose Peiro. The National Team left Munich with a good haul of medals to which must be added 27 finalist positions, very close to the historic national cap of Gothenburg 2006 with 29. the very high level of competitiveness that our athletes have”, said the coach.

“Every year there are people who stay out of the national team for one reason or another and it is normal for them to protest. It has always happened and will continue to happen. My mission is to make the team as competitive as possible” , explained Peiró referring to the controversial list of athletes called to participate in Oregon and Munich. “I think we haven’t reached the ceiling yet and we have to work to get as high as possible”he added Peiro identifying upcoming challenges with a inner european in Istanbul or the world cup in budapest.

One of the most positive European notes is the average age of the Spanish medalists and finalists. Sarah Gallego (21 years), Jaël Bestue (21 years), asier martinez (22 years), mario garcia romo (23 years), Mo Katir (24 years old) o Mariano Garcia (24 years old), are some examples of the bright future of Spanish athletics, to which the figure of the triple jumper must be added Jordan Diaz (21 years old), who will join the team in a few months.
