Enrique Cerezopresident of Atletico Madridthis Thursday appreciated as an “equal” and “very interesting” group the pairing of the rojiblanco team with Porto, Bayer Leverkusen and Bruges in the first phase of the Champions League 2022-23.
“We clashed with everyone, lately too. It’s an equal group, good games, very interesting. We have to be lucky to get into the round of 16″, he explained in remarks to ‘Movistar‘ from Istanbul, the venue for the draw, where he recalled last season’s win at Do Dragao against Porto, “at a difficult time”, when a loss or draw would have “put them out of the group”.
“Every year is different, the teams are renewed, the teams change, so do we.. It’s a very equal group and it will be nice to see them all competing”, added Cerezo, downplaying Bayer Leverkusen’s current penultimate position in the Bundesliga: “It’s the start of the season. A good start or a bad start doesn’t mean that in 15 or 20 days or four months you will be the champion of the group.”
“We’re in a position to compete and I think we’re going to do well,” added Cerezo, who gave a ‘7’ grade to Atlético’s draw in Istanbul.
