The fourth most expensive transfer of what we have on the market is now official. Yesterday the clubs involved announced the signing of Swedish striker Alexander Isak, 22, for Newcastle from Real Sociedad in exchange for 70 million euros and a goal bonus worth another 5 million. According to the agreement, the San Sebastian club guarantees a percentage of a future sale of the player.
Isak ranks as the most expensive signings of the summer behind French midfielder Aurélien Tchouameni, for whom Real Madrid paid 80 million euros to Monaco, Uruguayan striker Darwin Núñez, who was hired by Liverpool from Benfica in exchange for 75 million, and Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who left Real Madrid for Manchester United after paying 71 million.
Records were cut at Real Sociedad and Newcastle
Isak’s operation broke all records both at Real Sociedad and at Newcastle. This is the record transfer in the history of the Basque club and it is also the most expensive signing of the ‘magpies, surpassing the 44 million euros they invested in 2019 for the Brazilian Joelinton from Hoffenheim.
Undoubtedly, the inclusion of Isak confirms the economic potential of Newcastle, who became the nouveau riche of the Premier League in October 2021 when the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia acquired it for 354 million euros.
Newcastle transfer since January
Since then the northern English club have spent a further €238m on transfers. In the past January market, he invested 102 million in Bruno Guimaraes, Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Matt Targett. And this summer he spent another 136 million on the option to buy Targett (17.5), fellow defender Sven Botman (37), goalkeeper Nick Pope (11.5) and Isak (70).
