Union Berlin beat Schalke 1-6 on Saturday at home, endorsing their performance in the first three days of the Bundesliga and showing their credentials to challenge for the top spots in the standings.
After Union, a team with a low budget, managed to qualify for the Europa League last season, they are showing that their performance from last year has a solid foundation.
In victory, the Union is on top, although perhaps only for a few hours as Bayern still have to play against Borussia Mönchengladbach. If Bayern win, Union will be second, but in any case they will be one of the sensations in the Bundesliga again.
Several struggling teams got their first wins on Saturday.
RB Leipzig beat Wolfsburg 2-0, with two goals from Christopher Nkunku, and Bayer Leverkusen, counting their games for defeat, beat Mainz 0-3.
For Leverkusen, the victory could be a release after a bad start, but they need to show continuity for the rest of the season in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
A reaction from Leipzig is also expected, although their situation, with two draws and one loss in the first three games, is less dramatic.
Wolfsburg are still winless. He has only two points in his account, which is clearly below the aspirations of the team now led by Niko Kovac.
Freiburg achieved a third victory on Friday, against Bochum 1-0, and is in the group of teams with nine points from four games.
That group also included Borussia Dortmund, who beat Hertha 0-1, and Hoffenheim, who beat Augsburg 1-0.
