Enric Mas (Movistar) was ambitious and enthusiastic on the second rest day of the Vuelta, who arrived in Alicante from Asturias. The Balearic cyclist, although he prefers to try “every day”, is ready to play “all or nothing for the general classification”, once he has reduced the doubts about himself that he expressed at the beginning of Utrecht in the 19th .
“I live every day. In Holland I had more doubts than now, but still some. On the road I was with the strongest and that motivates. Regarding the personal doubts I may have, I worked in the period between the Tour and the Vuelta, then I had a problem with Covid, a period with more rest than training. I keep asking myself questions that I answer positively, I hope this continues until the end of the Vuelta,” said the Movistar leader.
But, twice seconds in the Vuelta, he knows the need for Movistar to save the category, an issue that will be proportional to his role in the general classification, where he is ready to fight until Madrid.
“I will sacrifice myself to win the Vuelta, I know the points issue, and the more points I get, the more points we get.. We can’t kill the general, or give up the points. I want to do everything or nothing for the Vuelta,” he said.
“NO DOUBT, EVENPOEL IS THE STRONGEST”
Mas, second overall 1.12 behind Remco Evenepoel, acknowledged the Belgian’s excellence so farbut he does not forget that the Slovenian Primoz Roglic won 3 laps and he can improve.
“Remco is the strongest, I don’t know if it can explode one day, but it has been the best in the whole Vuelta, it gives the best version since it became professionals. Until the opposite is proven, it is necessary let’s accept it there”.
Regarding Primoz Roglic, the Balearic cyclist warns of quality and winning mentality of a runner adapted to the Vuelta like no other.
“Primoz now has a time trial that suits him. If he progresses he will show that he is a crack at that terrain. He won 3 Vueltas and this year he came to win, he is a rider who plays with all or nothing. If he can’t, he’ll try to surprise Sierra Nevada in Madrid. I hope he’s at his level”, he explained.
Asked about the role of Carlos Rodríguez and Juan Ayuso, fourth and fifth overall, Enric Mas showed no doubts about the relationship that both riders could have.
“They are very young and we can see that they are very good, they both have a bright future. Yesterday we saw them perform at a very high level in Les Praeres. This is the first big one for both of them and they have to go every day. Now came the land of Juan, who was from Alicante, and then of Carlos in Granada. They are rivals, but I see that Spanish cycling is reviving, it is clear that we have young riders who will win important races,” he assured.
Ahead of this Tuesday’s time trial in Alicante, Mas hopes to offer his best versioneven knowing how difficult it is for the favorites, certainly Evenepoel and Roglic.
“It’s stage 10, we’re tired, but I hope to have a good time trial. I hope I do a decent job and don’t lose too much time. I didn’t think about what I could lose, I’ll give it my all. . Sometimes I have done good times and I hope this time it will be so,” he concluded.
