Andreescu apologized after messing up the fat during a change of clothes

Date:

Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu apologized to his sponsor Nike for an outburst on court after his wardrobe choice for Monday’s first-round match landed him in trouble amid windy conditions.

Andreescu was on the Grandstand court to play against the French Harmony Tan, but the wind caused her skirt to rise again and again, and as it flew it affected her blows. The 22-year-old Canadian approached the chair umpire to request an extra bathroom break to change from the unexpected situation.

“Doesn’t this count as one of my changes (toilet-break)? I mean it’s not my fault, it’s Nike’s fault,” he told the referee.

“This dress is so, so bad… I need to go (change). It’s really bad,” she said, unaware that she was attacking her sponsor in a conversation perfectly audible through the referee’s microphone.

Andreescu came back wearing a white Nike tank top and short skirt to eventually defeat Tan 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.

“It was just bugging me on some forehands. Obviously the wind didn’t help,” he told reporters.

“But I didn’t mean to ignore what I said to the referee. I was trying to talk him out of taking one of my bathroom breaks, because I know we only have two. He was very nice to say that (what he asked for) me is absolute.”

“I really could have used different language. So I apologize to anyone I disrespected. I love Nike and I hope to be with them forever,” he proclaimed to defuse the situation with his sponsor.

Andreescu will face Beatriz Haddad Maia on Wednesday in the second round.
