The 2020 US Open Champion Dominic Thiem has retreated from Monte Carlo Masters 1000 next week due to COVID-19, his team said Thursday. The 28-year-old Austrian, also a two-time Roland Garros finalist and once from Australia before winning the title at Flushing Meadows, contracted the virus at an ATP Challenger Tour event in Marbella last week.
Thiem said in a post on social media that he has tested positive and will undergo a medical test to determine his return to competition. In his first fight in nine months since suffering a wrist injury at the 2021 Mallorca Open, the former world number three fell on set to Pedro Cachín of Argentina in Marbella. He will return to Austria and will miss the April 11-17 clay court tournament in Monte Carlo, his spokesperson confirmed.
For his part, the Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini nor will he participate in Monte Carlo or the following Masters 1000’s Madrid and Rome next month, after undergoing minor surgery on his hand last week following his retirement from Miami. “Following the advice of medical experts, my team and I decided it was very important that I didn’t put time pressure on my recovery process,” the number six Italian said on Instagram. “Leaving these events, especially Rome, was a very difficult decision, however it was the right one to ensure many more years of competing at the highest level for the big trophies,” he added.
