the swiss Dominique Aegerter (Intact) won the MotoE World Cup on Saturday after his rival, Brazilian Eric Granado, crashed out in the penultimate race of the season at the San Marino Grand Prix in Misano.
Holding a 37.5-point championship lead going into Sunday’s final race, Aegerter secured the world title after finishing second on Saturday behind Italian winner Mattia Casadei (Pons).
Only Granado (LCR) had caught up with the Swiss rider before the final weekend. But the Brazilian missed his chance by crashing. Back on his bike, he managed to finish but was not in the points (17th).
The Swiss runner, who would have won the race last year but was disallowed for a dirty final maneuver, replaced the Spaniard Jordi Torres, winner of the last two editions.
With a difficult Dominique Aegerter starting from the pole, Mattia Casadei stole the privileged position from him, who was the most skilled to overtake the Swiss, while a few positions behind was Miquel Pons (LCR E-Team) suffered the first fall of the race.
With Casadei and Aegerter occupying the first two places, it was Eric Granado who did not miss the Swiss with the aim of extending the resolution of the title to the second attack in Misano. The Brazilian just needed to win to have a real chance of winning the cup and he didn’t think twice and took advantage of Casadei’s mistake to put the bike on him.
In a group made up of Granado, Aegerter, Casadei, Matteo Ferrari and Jordi Torres (Pons Racing 40), excitement ran high as the Brazilian engaged in a battle to the limit that led to Granado making a mistake that put his layup is the first electric cup title for Aegerter.
The following positions were decided in favor of Torres and Alex Escrig (Tech3 E-Team), who completed the Top 5 followed by Niccolò Canepa (WithU GRT RNF MotoE) and Hikari Okubo (Avant Ajo MotoE). Kevin Manfredi (Octo Pramac MotoE) would finish 8th. Behind, Xavier Cardelús (Avintia Esponsorama Racing) and Héctor Garzó (Tech3 E-Team) managed to complete the Top 10 just ahead of Kevin Zannoni (Ongetta SIC58 Squadra Corse)
