Foggia won at Misano and Izan Guevara, new leader

Date:

A day after securing his Moto2 spot in the Italtrans ranks, Italian Dennis Foggia gave himself an unlikely victory in the Moto3 San Marino GP with a completely controlled race where he played his rivals until the last lap where he dominated Jaume Masia and Izan Guevara that became for the first time at the head of the World Cup after the zero of Sergio García Dols where everything happened: bad start, touch, fall and disqualification.

From the pole position, the Turkish Oncu kept the initiative against the rookies Moreira and Holgado and Guevara, brilliantly, overtook them to follow the Turk. García Dols was unable to advance from 13th on the grid and was involved in contact between Muñoz and Pitito Fernández, driving him away with his leg, both cutting the chicane. By a lap and a half Guevara was leading the race with the leader in the middle of the pack. Five points separated them at the start of the race and the Spaniard from the start became the new provisional leader.

Black flag on García Dols

Guevara started to print that rhythm that he had in his pocket, he caused nerves in the group and this time García Dols caught Oncu, he again lost time for several corners after falling alone in turn 4 and temporarily surrender the lead he held from Portugal uninterrupted. And it was in four laps that so many things happened to him. After a step inside the box he returned to the track in case he could get a point in the case of a red flag, but just as lapped. But on top of that, they showed him a black flag of disqualification for interfering with the group fighting for the top-10.

At the front Izan remained with six tenths of Foggia and Holgado and David Muñoz trying to join them, as well as Jaume Masià. Shortly before the equator, a quartet with Foggia, Guevara and Red Bull KTM team-mates Ajo Holgado and Masià, led by the Italian from Honda, had consolidated the lead. Muñoz lost a wheel on the Suzuki and fell back, thus losing his chance to become the youngest winner of a Moto3 race in history to be held by Maverick Viñales.

With eight to spare Foggia, who started the day 49 points behind leader García, slowed and this allowed Oncu and his teammate Suzuki to join the group. Guevara or Masià stole the lead from Foggia cleverly regained in less than two corners, clearly playing with his rivals.

Foggia cuts the table

Foggia has reached its growth spurt and Holgado and Suzuki drop to the sextet. Masiá and Oncu passed Guevara after his attempt to pass Foggia, who had gone into defensive mode in the last two laps and was not allowed to overtake and Oncu’s panic after trying to pass the Honda rider left the three chasing a no-chance victory, the third of the year for Foggia. The last two places on the podium were taken by Masià and the new leader Guevara by 11 points to García Dols and 35 to Foggia.

Regarding the other Spaniards, Holgado was fifth, Muñoz tenth, Ortolà eleventh, Pitito Fernández 17th, Artigas 20th and Ana Carrasco 22nd. Carlos Tatay crashed two from the end and Sergio García Dols was disqualified
