“It’s a bit surprising to leave your comfort zone”

Date:

For the first time since he became a professional footballer, Luca Sangalli (Donostia, February 10, 1995) had to find a life away from Real. The youth squad in MD admitted it had paid off, but he faced his new stage in Cartagena with enthusiasm.

How are you in Cartagena?

The truth is that at first the climate issue was uphill for me. It’s very hot here, but I’m slowly getting used to it. The preseason helped me consider all of this and I was satisfied. Regarding the adaptation, the coach from the first moment told us about his way of playing, which is almost the same playing style that I had at Real. I’m slowly bringing the intensity and playing style back to what I was before.

After playing for Sanse and Real, I thought it was a radical change, right?

Yes. It was the first time I left San Sebastián, from Real. From my comfort zone. At first it was a little surprising because it was a radical change. When you start training, you meet your teammates, things change. Football is still football wherever you are. It’s easy to adapt because the game is the same. It is positive that the team’s game is the same as that of Real.

How do you feel about the first few days of the season in the Second Division?

The first game at home, I couldn’t play and we were unlucky to lose. Since then, in the next two I have been able to play a few minutes and we have won those two – the interview was before the fourth day, which was held yesterday. I had a lot of fun with that part. Being able to start counting on minutes and above all on helping the team win. Little by little I try to get the momentum to get into the starting eleven and make the most of all the minutes I have.

Do you have any goals set for this season?

After what happened to me the last few seasons, between one thing and another I haven’t been able to play much. I am out of work for injuries, rehabilitation and so on. My main goals this season are: to feel like a footballer again, to take the dynamics of being in a season again and feel part of what the team is doing.

What can Sangalli show in the Cartagena column?

My intention is to return to the level that I showed in some stages of my first seasons in the Real first team. Go back to being the player I used to be and try to contribute as much as possible to the team.

How did you experience Sanse being dropped from the first team with Roberto López?

From the first moment that Roberto Olabe told me about it with a very good manner, we agreed that it would be a very good opportunity for the team and for me. After all, he hasn’t played in nearly two seasons and wants to get back into the team dynamic. For me the best option is to choose Zubieta. Stay at home, in a cozy place like La Real. Taking advantage of the opportunity that Sanse is in the Second Division, for me it is the perfect place to finish the recovery. I gave the team the extra experience and seniority it lacked.

When did you feel like you were no longer part of the Real?

At the beginning of last season, I played very little because I was finishing my recovery. Then there was a part of the season in which I was a starter and I had a lot of participation, but especially in the second round and towards the end I saw that it was starting to stop counting. The competition in the midfield is very high and there are players of a very high level. As the end of the season approached and it was the last year of my contract, I noticed that they were going to have a hard time renewing me.

In 2013, he played in the Youth League against Manchester United, the formidable rivals who once again upset Real in the Europa League. The visit to Old Trafford is repeated on Thursday. How do you see Real, with options to add to Manchester?

I was lucky to belong to the team that played in the Youth League. Álvaro Odriozola scored with Bautista’s assist and I have great memories. It’s good to see Real that they can face teams of that level and that category. They went to Europe for the third year in a row. Now we get used to it, but you have to consider how hard it is to get there. I wish you all the best. I think that every year they show more quality in European competition. This year could be a good year to do something different.
