The preview of the Champions League has been moved for Napoli, and specifically, for their coach, Luciano Spalletti. In a video published by ‘La Gazzetta dello Sport’, the Italian coach appeared this afternoon at the press conference before the match against Liverpool on Wednesday with Maradona wearing his right arm in a sling and crutches.
According to the same Italian media, Spalletti yesterday suffered a clavicle in an accident at home and was operated on this very night. Although the Napoli coach was unable to attend the morning training session, he did appear at a press conference. So far, the club has not published anything about its coach’s unfortunate accident.
The analogy with Clement’s precedent
Spalletti’s episode has certain parallels with others such as Javier Clemente’s. In 2007, Barakaldo’s coach – then Serbian national team manager-, suffered a more serious accident at home in which he broke his clavicle and four ribs, in addition to being a punctured lung. This did not stop him leaving the hospital immediately to travel to Belgrade to officiate two qualifying matches for Euro 2008.
Clemente couldn’t catch the plane, so he took a car trip over 2,300 kilometers between Bilbao and Belgrade to manage the Balkan group. Upon arrival, he was greeted by a hero with the Serbian Sports Minister, Snezana Samardzic Markovic, among those present.
