Sometimes I realize, or I know, that I can drop a set every now and then to save some energy for the rest of the sets”, said the number 5 seed in the press room. “So I think I’ve matured and learned how to play five sets better than last year,” he added.
He improved to 12-2 at Grand Slams in 2022 after making just two unforced errors in the first set, 11 below No. 13 Berrettini. “Everything worked out in my favor,” said Ruud, who will now face number 27 Karen Khachanov, Nick Kyrgios’ executioner.
Three players have a chance to replace Medvedeve at No. 1: Ruud, Rafael Nadal (who lost on Monday in the fourth round against Frances Tiafoe) and the number 3, Carlos Alcaraz (who is playing this Wednesday night session against Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals).
“It’s still a long way off, I think, but of course it’s possible. And Casper has a bit of motivation with that in mind,” said Christian Ruud, “because even when he was little, his ultimate goal is to be No. 1 in world.”, he concluded.
