Soon Woo Kwon achieved the first victory for South Korea in the last stage of Davis cup after starring in a surprise victory over the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime by 7-6(5) and 6-3, in 1 hour and 37 minutes, to tie the match to be decided next in doubles
Félix Auger-Aliassime started in steamroller mode and went 4-1 on the fast track, but Kwon knew how to hold her serve first to stay in the set and then wait for her chance to level the match and take it in the ‘tie – break’ where, in a very consistent game from the back of the court, he won the first round.
The Canadian, who left the ‘top ten’ this week, had no expected reaction in the second set but quite the opposite. Kwon didn’t lower the piston and Aliassime looked increasingly uncomfortable and sloppy against a flawless rival.
The Asian stood up with a 4-0 lead and served to put the match on track, but he was unable to string together his second break and left his door rival to hope.
