Roger Federer’s full letter:

“Of all the gifts that tennis has given me over the years, without a doubt, it’s all the people I’ve met along the way. Friends, rivals and fans that the sport has given me in this life .Now I want to share some news with you all.”

“As many of you know, over the past three years I have faced many challenges due to injuries and surgeries. I have worked hard to get back in top competitive shape, but I also know my body’s capabilities and my limits and this is the message my body has given me. I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 games in 24 years. Tennis has treated me better than I ever dreamed .And now I must recognize if it is time to end my competitive career.

“The Laver Cup in London next week is my last ATP event. I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but not in the Grand Slams or on the ATP tour.”

“It’s a bittersweet decision, because I’ll miss everything the circuit has given me, but at the same time, there’s a lot to celebrate. I consider myself one of the luckiest people in the world. I’ve been given a special talent to play tennis and I did it at a level I never thought possible. And for much longer than I thought possible.”

“I want to give special thanks to my wonderful wife Mirka, who lived every minute with me. She pinned me before the finals, she watched countless matches even when she was 8 months pregnant. I want also thank my four wonderful children, who have always supported me, eager to explore new places and create great memories on this trip. Seeing my family supporting me from the stands is a feeling that I will cherish it forever.”

“I also want to thank and acknowledge my dear parents and my dear sister, without whom this would not have been possible. A big thank you to my former coaches, who always guided me in the right direction. It was wonderful mo! To Suiss Tennis (Swiss Federation) who believed in me as a young player and gave me a good start. I really want to thank and recognize my wonderful team: Ivan, Dani, Roland and especially Seve and Pierre who gave me the best advice and was Always there for me. Also to Tony for managing my career creatively for 17 years. You are all amazing and I loved every minute with you.”

“I want to thank my loyal sponsors, who have been true partners. And the really hardworking teams and tournaments on the ATP Tour, who welcome us all with kindness and hospitality. I also want to thank my rivals on the court. I have been very fortunate to play many epic matches that I will never forget. We fought fair, with passion and intensity. I always do my best to respect the history of this sport. I am very grateful. Pushed we each other and together we are taking tennis to a new level.

“Above all, I must give a special thanks to my incredible fans. You will never know the great strength and confidence you have given me, the incredible feeling of walking through packed stadiums and halls . It has been one of the great emotions of my life. Without you, these victories would make me feel alone, instead of full of joy and emotion”.

“The last 24 years on tour have been an incredible adventure. Sometimes what seems like 24 hours is so deep and fascinating that I’ve lived my whole life. I’ve had the great fortune to play in front of you at age which is 40 different countries. I laughed and cried, felt joy and pain, and most of all I felt an incredible life. During my travels, I met so many wonderful people who will be friends forever. They provided taking time out of their busy schedules to come see me play and cheer me on to the world. Thank you.”

When my love for tennis began, I was a ball boy in my hometown of Basel. I watched the players in wonder. They are like giants to me. That’s where my dream started. My dreams led me to work harder and I started to believe in myself. Small victories gave me confidence and this was my way to the best journey that has led me to this day.”

“So I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart, everyone around the world who helped me fulfill the dreams of a young Swiss ball boy.”

“Finally, for tennis: I love you and I will never leave you”
