Ogura pays tribute to Japan

Historic victory of local rider Ai Ogura making the Moto2 World Championship red hot. Double Spanish podium and Augusto Fernández retains the lead with two points

Since 2019, the Japanese fans have not experienced a live MotoGP World Grand Prix. The pandemic had hermetically closed the borders of the Asian country that has been watching motorcycle racing on television for two years. This weekend, the cradle of the championship’s main brands reopened its doors to the championship and the enthusiastic Japanese crowd reveled in the victory of a local rider in the intermediate category, something not seen here in Motegi since 2006. The protagonist of the day, Ai Ogura, not only made history in his country, but left the standings with a fist as only two points separate the first two classified points.

The race started with a stratospheric start by Arón Canet from pole. In just two laps, he was alone with a two-second lead, but the Valencian driver put in so much effort at the start that he crashed on lap three, practically saying goodbye to his title options. Without Canet on the track, the lead of the race was taken over by another Spaniard, Alonso López, who remained in the lead of the group until Ogura attacked ten laps before the end. Already in the lead, he changed the pace and went solo to a special victory for him. “It’s the most important day of my life,” the Japanese recognized as soon as he finished the race. And what is certain is that he will never forget the ceremony on stage when the national anthem was played for an entire country.

Seeing Ogura’s result, the Moto2 leader had no choice but to get his act together. Augusto Fernández started from the fourth row and had to move up positions from the first lap. The Balearics had it relatively easy until he reached the third position. He was ahead of Alonso López from Madrid, who did not give him the position. He even tried twice, but López immediately returned. When he finally consolidated it and finished second, Ogura had already escaped by two seconds and chose to hold on to second. The Moto2 World Championship is already a matter of two and it looks like he will arrive alive in Valencia.
