Fernando Santos, coach of Portugal, lamented the opportunities Cristiano Ronaldo missed in the match his team lost to Spain tonight, but he made it clear that “confidence” in the former Real Madrid soccer player is “total”.
“Portugal is a team, full trust in Cristiano. Now he had three or four chances, he usually marked them and now he didn’t score them. This is football”, indicated the Portuguese coach in his appearance in front of the journalists.
Santos believes his team was “better” than Spain in the first half despite the fact that he lacked “to spin the ball” to punish the rival defense, and revealed that Diogo Jota’s change was at the player’s request.
“He begged to leave because he was so tired, the change he was going to make was not him. My idea was to put him in a different position so that the team could continue to go up and have possession of the ball because we took a step back”, explained Fernando Santos.
“I put Vitinha and João Mario in to have possession and to play more, but we couldn’t, we started going backwards. However, we had two good chances to score but we were not successful”, said the Portuguese coach.
Portuguese coach praises La Roja, “a great team” which he sees as a candidate for the World Cup title, like Portugal because “both have good players.”
