The Supreme Committee (SC) of Qatar 2022 has rejected trivializing its “commitment to protect the health and safety of the workers who built the World Cup stadiums”, after the presentation of Denmark kit made by Hummel brand as a protest against the country’s history of human rights.
An SC spokesperson said that since Qatar won the right to host the World Cup, it “has worked diligently with the Qatari government to ensure that the tournament leaves a lasting legacy on society” and that his “commitment” to that legacy “contributed to the implementation of important reforms in the labor system, implementing laws that protect the rights of workers and guarantee the improvement of their living conditions. “
In a statement it also noted that through its collaboration with the UEFA Working Group, platforms led by FIFA and other independent groups, they had maintained a “robust and transparent dialogue with the DBU, which” provided lead to a better understanding of the progress made, the challenges we face and the legacy we will deliver after 2022.”
“So, we refute Hummel’s claim that this contest cost thousands of lives. Furthermore, we wholeheartedly reject the trivialization of our true commitment to protecting the health and safety of the 30,000 workers who built the FIFA World Cup stadiums and other tournament projects. The same commitment now extends to 150,000 workers in various tournament services and 40,000 workers in the hospitality sector,” he added.
The organizing committee also considers that “countries must always do more to protect people’s rights around the world, including Denmark” and stresses that “the work of the SC is recognized by many international entities communities such as the ILO and ITUC as regional reference”.
“Like all countries, progress on these issues is a journey without a finish line, and Qatar is committed to that journey,” he said. We urge the DBU – Danish Federation – to accurately convey the result of its extensive communication and cooperation with the SC, and ensure that it is accurately communicated to its Hummel partners.”
