The Arbitration Court of Sport (TAS) reported this Friday that it has begun arbitrations for the case affecting soccer player Byron Castillo after receiving the appeals presented by the soccer federations of Peru and Chile against the decision that issued by FIFA’s Appeal Commission on September 15, 2022.
TAS recalled that the controversy “is related to the eligibility of the player Byron David Castillo Segura to participate in the matches of the national team of the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF), which corresponds to the South American qualifiers (CONMEBOL) for Qatar World Cup 2022, between September 2021 and March 2022”.
Peru and Chile are asking to join the World Cup in Qatar
The appeal filed by the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) is directed against the FEF and FIFA, CAS said, indicating that the PPF is requesting that Ecuador be excluded from the final stage of the World Cup and replaced by Peru, which is the best placed in the team standings after Ecuador.
The appeal filed by the Chilean Football Federation (FFCH), refers to the TAS, is directed against the FEF, the player Byron Castillo and FIFA. FFCH is asking CAS to determine that the player is ineligible for the eight matches he played in the qualifiers, and to take into account the matches lost by Ecuador, which would put Chile in fourth position in the CONMEBOL qualifiers for Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Ten days before the World Cup as the deadline
Both appellants are asking CAS to issue the final award, at the latest, on November 10, 2022, ten before the start of the World Cup.
In May 2022, FFCH filed a complaint with FIFA, alleging the possible falsification of documents establishing Byron Castillo’s Ecuadorian nationality, as well as his alleged ineligibility to play in Ecuador between September 2021 and March 2022. , which corresponds to the qualifications for the World Cup in Qatar.
FIFA agreed with Ecuador
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee initiated disciplinary proceedings and issued its decision on 10 June 2022, dismissing all charges against the FEF, thus ending the proceedings.
The FPF and the FFCH appealed the said decision before the FIFA Appeal Committee, which dismissed the said appeals and thus confirmed the decision of the first instance.
“CAS arbitrations have begun and are at a preliminary stage. A procedural calendar is in preparation,” the court concluded.
