The Mexican King Vargasfeatherweight champion World Boxing Council (WBC)face the American O’Shaquie Foster for the vacant title of super featherweight division of the same organization, in a duel whose details will be announced soon.
The WBC Governing Board voted Monday to approve Rey Vargas’ request to fight for the vacant super featherweight title against Foster, the division’s silver champion and mandatory contender.
The super featherweight belt was vacated after the American Shakur Stevenson didn’t give up 130 pounds in weight in defense of his reign against the Brazilian Robson Conceicao.
Although Stevenson defeated the South American nine days ago, he lost the belt, which he will never regain because he jumped to 135 pounds.
Vargas, 31, defeated Filipino Mark Masayo on July 9 in a tight fight and added his 36th victory in as many fights, 22 of them by knockout.
The Mexican was the WBC Super Bantamweight Champion from 2017 to 2019, after five successful defenses; won the featherweight crown and will now try to dominate the third division.
Foster tied Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov of Tajikistan last year for his 19th win, 11 before the deadline, with a pair of losses.
The World Council ordered a period of negotiation to settle the fight between Vargas and Foster, with the winner having to make two mandatory defenses, which the World Council confirmed.
The super featherweight category has two more monarchs, the Dominican Héctor Luis García, champion of the World Boxing Association and the British Joe Cordina, of the World Federation, while the World Organization belt is vacant.
