Xabi Alonso, new Bayer Leverkusen coach until 2024

Date:

The former Sanse coach takes charge of the German bank and signs his new contract for the remainder of the course and one more

Xabi Alonso was appointed this Wednesday as the new coach of Bayer Leverkusen. The Toulouse player has accepted Germany’s offer to sit on the bench in one of the Bundesliga classics, which is currently in low hours after starting the season with poor results. He will sign his new contract for the rest of the season and one more, until 2024.

Alonso, realist legend and former Sanse coach between 2019 and 2022, makes the leap to the frontline of world football on a renowned bench. Two summers ago there were also Bundesliga siren songs after Borussia Mönchengladbach became interested in his situation, but they did not materialize and the player from Tolosa continued his career in the realistic quarry with the historic promotion to Second in the 20-21 campaign.

Now, once released from the txuri-urdin discipline, Alonso lands in Leverkusen with the aim of changing the course of the historic ‘Aspirina’ club, now led from the bench by the Swiss of Spanish descent Gerardo Seoane, and who in the Bundesliga relegates places.

He will take charge of a team that is penultimate in the table after adding just 5 points in eight games. The decision to sack Seoane was made urgently after the German team stumbled 2-0 on Tuesday in the Champions League against Porto in Do Dragao. Now the German team occupies third place in group B, which it shares with Bruges, Atlético de Madrid and the Portuguese team itself. Leverkusen has 3 points, as many as Atlético and Porto and six less than the surprising leader Bruges.

Alonso has a good reputation in Germany after playing for Bayern Munich between 2014 and 2017. The Gipuzkoan hung up his shoes in the Bavarian team after being coached by Pep Guardiola and Carlos Ancelotti, two of the coaches who have most influenced his young coaching career.

He was currently without a team after Sanse was relegated to the First RFEF last season. It will be his first experience in the First Division and with a Champions team.
