Indonesian police on Thursday charged six people, including three police officers, with negligence and other charges in Saturday’s stampede at a soccer stadium that killed 131 people and injured more than 460.
This was announced by the head of the National Police, Listyo Sigit Prabowo, in a press conference where he said that among the charges filed are articles 359 and 360 of the Penal Code regarding negligence resulting in death or serious injury.
Among those charged are Indonesian soccer league president Ahmad Hadian Lukita, as well as Arema club chief executive Abdul Haris and Kanjuruhan stadium security chief Suko Sutrisno.
the investigation is ongoing
Prabowo said they are investigating the use of tear gas that caused a stampede during the match between Arema and Persebaya Surabaya, the visiting team, at the Kanjuruhan stadium in the city of Malang, on the island of Java.
After losing 2-3, Arema fans descended on the pitch, sparking clashes with the police, who responded with batons and tear gas, sparking a stampede of thousands of people.
Stampede fatalities included two police officers and 33 minors between the ages of 4 and 17.
There were no fans of the opposing team, as it was agreed that they should not attend to avoid clashes.
semi-closed doors
The police chief explained that many victims died of suffocation and fractures when they tried to escape through some doors that were only open 1.5 meters, causing a large crowd of people.
Prabowo also indicated that there are security flaws in the stadium that have not been resolved since 2020.
Ten officials were suspended
Authorities have so far suspended 10 police officers, including the Malang Police Chief, while they investigate another 20 officers for their role in Saturday’s events.
Images of the terror have circulated around the world and, amid pressure at home and abroad, Indonesian president Joko Widodo has decided to open an independent investigation to find out those responsible for the tragedy and review the actions of police
