Next October 22 of this month is a very important date for Spanish women’s football. For that day is set the celebration of draw the world cupwoman who in the coming summer will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Thirty-two teams (29 are already classified and the remaining three will appear in the play-off tournament) will participate and will be divided into four pots of eight teams each. Six teams came from the AFC (China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Philippines, Vietnam and Australia as the host country). Four from CAF (Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia), four more from CONCACAF (Canada, Costa Rica, Jamaica and the United States).
Added to this are three from CONMEBOL (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia), one from OFC (New Zealand as the organizing country) and eleven from UEFA, where two teams have yet to be determined and will be announced this coming Tuesday (Denmark, England , France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Switzerland). The three selections that are yet to be announced will appear in the aforementioned play-off that will take place from February 17 to 23 of next year.
The dynamics of the World Cup draw
Although the final three national teams are not known, it will be in just two weeks when this draw will be held and where Spain will be the first to compete in pot 2 because the distribution, determined by FIFA, will be made according to the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking. The top six ranked teams are in Pot 1 along with co-hosts Australia and New Zealand. Right now these top six teams are the United States, Germany, Sweden, England, France and the Netherlands.
Teams classified from 7 to 14 go to pot 2 (where Spain is now with Canada, Brazil, Republic of Korea, Japan, Australia, Norway and Iceland). The teams classified from 15 to 22 are in pot 3 and, finally, in the fourth are the teams classified from 23 to 27 including the three that qualify for the playoffs.
Competition dates: from July 20 to August 20
The start of the World Cup is scheduled for July 20, with the first group stage until August 3. From August 5 to 8, the round of 16 will be played. It will be on August 11 and 12 when the quarterfinals will be held and for on 15 and 16 the two semifinals. On the 19th of this month, the third and fourth places are up for grabs, leaving the grand final for the 20th at the Gadigal Stadium in Sydney, Australia.
