Lopez dresses up as ‘Magic’ Alonso on Phillip Island

Date:

Alonso López has taken an authoritative win in Moto2, with Pedro Acosta on the podium. Augusto Fernández hands over the lead to Ai Ogura after an early crash

A mistake in free practice on Friday, in which Alonso López shot Italian Vietti, left him with a long lap penalty that he had to do in the race. According to the regulations, he had three laps to complete it, so the Madrid driver risked getting in the middle of the group at the first substitution. He started third on the grid and had a plan in mind: if he got to the front of the race, maybe he wouldn’t lose that many positions. But even in his wildest dreams, he couldn’t imagine a beginning as he had. He was already leading the race in just four corners and with a faster pace of one second per lap, he appeared on the third lap with enough lead to complete his penalty and stay in the lead. From then on it was a walk for the pilot nicknamed “the wizard of Los Molinos”, a city in the mountains of Madrid where he comes from. And so, when he crossed the finish line alone, he celebrated his second World Cup win by showing off an ace of spades he’d been wearing in his suit all race.

There was one movie ahead and another behind. And this one suddenly changed the script when Augusto Fernández went to the ground with 10 laps to go. An unexpected and inexplicable mistake, as the podium was secured and he rode in pairs with his teammate Pedro Acosta, well behind. The Spaniard was about to make a splash in the Moto2 championship as his title rival, Ogura, barely fought for the points. And yet Fernández’s zero, along with the Japanese’s eleventh final position, changed the lead of the intermediate category. With a lead of 3.5 points, it is now Ogura who will hit his first title ball in the next round in Malaysia.

The Moto2 race also had many Spanish protagonists. Along with López on the podium, the “Shark” Pedro Acosta, while Fermín Aldeguer, Manu González and Jeremy Alcoba finished in the top six. Only Briton Jake Dixon, third, and who avoided a plenary session that would have been historic, slipped in.
