Simons doubled and Ajax took the lead again

Date:

PSV beat Utrecht this Sunday (6-1) and three players from the Eindhoven team achieved the double: former Barcelona player Xavi Simons (he has 8 goals in the current Eredivisie), Guus Til and El Ghazi. Meanwhile, Ajax regained the lead thanks to their 7-1 win over Excelsior, with the loss of AZ Alkmaar, who were in the lead, losing to Feyenoord (1-3) and falling to fourth place.

Ajax has 25 points, PSV is 2nd with 24 and Feyenoord is 3rd with 23, same as AZ. Meanwhile, Steven Berghuis and Brian Brobbey got braces for Ajax. Jorge Sánchez, Dusan Tadic and Mohammed Kudus also scored for the Amsterdam team.

Simons, who was loaned to PSV from Paris-Saint Germain and brought up in Barcelona’s academy, led to a towering victory for Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s team. With 8 ‘goals’, he has already positioned himself as the second top scorer in the competition, just one goal behind his teammate Cody Gakpo (9 goals), who did not score. Xavi Simons opened the scoring after eight minutes.

Sander Van de Streek’s equalizer in the 24th minute was a mirage. Utrecht, from the leading positions, could not stop the momentum of the local team. Guus Til then stepped into action to sentence the clash of goals in the 33rd minute, a pass from Philipp Max, and in the 38th minute after receiving the ball from Cody Gakpo, who missed in front of the goal.

Simons later scored a fourth in stoppage time and was replaced by El Ghazi, who claimed the lead role in the last episode. He rounded off the win with another double, in the 86th and 89th minutes.

PSV was a step away from the lead regained by Ajax, a great beneficiary of the day. He did not disappoint and overwhelmed Excelsior at the Johan Cruyff Arena with goals from Mexican Jorge Sánchez at quarter of an hour (his first goal in Europe) and Steven Berghuis ten minutes later and Brian Brobbey, who scored in the 45th minute and, then, the fourth in playing time , in the second half. Serbian Dusan Tadic made it the fifth and Steven Bergwijn the sixth with a quarter of an hour remaining. 7-0 is Ghanaian Mohammed Kudus. Excelsior scored the goal of honor in the 91st, through Nikolas Agrafiotis.

The day is marked by the unexpected stumble of AZ Alkmaar, who faced the tenth date as leader and fell in his field against Feyenoord. Now they are fourth in the table, overtaken by Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and the Rotterdam team.

Although Pascal Jansen’s side took the lead through Jens Odgaard’s goal, in the 26th minute, everything changed after half an hour. A penalty converted by Javairo Dilrosun equalized and, in the second half, Sebastian Szymarnski set up the visitors’ comeback.
