Javier Martínez and Isa Fuentes prepare for the Icelandic international race after being prophets in their country by winning Jimbee volcano
The Spanish ultra fund has first and last names. They are those of Javier Martínez and Isabel Fuentes, two Cartagens who have made sport their way of life. Bruises on the legs, stiff muscles and alarm clocks that ring every day at four in the morning that are worth their weight for a passion: that of collecting miles and discovering along the way the most remote corners that make the mountains, castles and fortresses of his city.
The prize for all these efforts was rewarded a few weeks ago with the Jimbee Volcano champions medal, the 112-kilometer international ultramarathon that held its first edition in Cartagena to the delight of all mountain enthusiasts. Martinez and Fuentes, neighbors (and friends) in La Vaguada, can ask for little more than to be prophets in their country.
Perhaps a wish for these two long-distance runners: that the ticket to Iceland’s volcano, obtained thanks to that triumph, become another unforgettable adventure for their mile-long legs. Martínez has them as fresh as a rose, “a bloody nerd” who made this passion, in addition his work with a specialized trail running shop (La Senda del Jabalí, Guayaquil street, number 13). From pure entertainment, he became “the best method of disconnecting” from the routine. The victory in Cartagena, the first in their country, was achieved in 12 hours, 18 minutes and 31 seconds.
Fuentes, the daughter of an Ecuadorian, with a Galician father and a woman from Cartagena for 14 years, is already preparing for the July appointment in Iceland. She is a prevention technician at work and says she is “new” and very excited after so many miles. The next preparatory appointment is the Falco Trail de Cehegín, on December 3rd.
