This Monday, October 17, a new edition of the Ballon d’Or gala will take place, with Real Madrid player Karim Benzema the favorite to win it in the men’s category and Alexia Putellas in the women’s category.
But what is the system used to select the winner and winner of the Ballon d’Or?
The first 30 male candidates and the first 20 female candidates are chosen by the award’s organizing magazine, France Football. And, to decide who wins, a jury of 211 expert journalists (one for each country attached to FIFA) selects five players and gives them a score of 6,4,3,2 and 1 point.
There are three criteria for choosing who wins the Ballon d’Or: individual and collective performances, the player’s class (including fair play) and their sporting career. In the event of a tie, the prize will go to the player selected in first place the most times in the voting.
The standard used in the Kopa Trophy
The Kopa Trophy recognizes the best player under 21 years of age. The list of 10 candidates before the gala was also drawn by France Football magazine. The Yashin Trophy rewards goalkeepers. As with the Ballon d’Or, the jury is made up of expert journalists, one from each country. Each member of the jury will select three goalkeepers and give them a score of 5.3 and 1 point.
