The United Cup will become an immediate reality, with a premiere on December 29, 2022 and ending on January 8, after eleven days of a competition that takes the space left in the ATP Cup for men’s countries, the initiative of Association of Professional Tennis Players (ATP) in response to the new concentration format of the Davis Cup promoted by Gerard Pique through Kosmos company.
Tennis Australia (TA) confirmed in a statement details of an event reminiscent of the old Hopman Cup, which featured the Australian tennis federation, as well as the now defunct ATP Cup. It will also host the United Cup, which will form part of a tour calendar leading up to Australian Openin Melbourne.
The cities of Brisbane, Perth and Sydney will host a preliminary stage that will bring together eighteen mixed teams, each consisting of a maximum of four men and four women.
Organized by the TA, ATP and women’s WTA, the prize money will be 15 million US dollars, which also distributes points for the ATP and WTA rankings.
How are countries classified?
The first 12 will be based on the ranking of the six best men and women in the ATP and WTA rankings registered. The other six countries will enter according to the best combined ranking of their best men and women.
What is the format?
Six groups of three countries each, spread over three areas. After the round robin of each group, each winner will qualify for three eliminatory rounds that will give three spots in the semifinals. The fourth will come from the best of the three losers in the group stage. The final stage will be played from January 6 to 8 in Sydney.
How is each tie played?
It will consist of two men’s singles, two women’s singles and one mixed doubles. Five points.
When will the draw be drawn and the participants announced?
The draw will be held on November 10, determining the first 16 participating countries. The remaining two will be announced the week of November 21.
