Fernando Alonso, fed up: ‘It was best that the engine broke down’

Date:

The Asturian saw Alpine drop out of the race in Mexico six laps before the end due to its umpteenth failure

Fernando Alonso’s gesture after leaving the Hermanos Rodríguez shortly after the finish said it all. Fist against a non-present enemy, arms crossed against the tires… He was noticeably disappointed.

«In the middle of the race I felt more or less at ease; the truth is I had the best races of the year both in Austin and here. I was about 30 seconds ahead of the compi and the McLarens, and in the end I lost a cylinder,” the Asturian explained of what happened, before gloating over the bad luck that follows him. “I wanted to stop for a long time, but the team wanted to see if there was a Safety Car or something and miraculously we stayed in the points, so… well, again only car 14, as always, and the truth is that’s very disappointed,” he admitted , before pointing out what a reality is for everyone: he can’t wait to get out of Alpine.

“It was very good until the engine stopped again, so… happy with the more or less personal performance, with how the race went, much better than yesterday, good pace today, but… there are only two left ” he snapped.

Carlos Sainz thanked him for finishing the Mexican Grand Prix because it was very difficult for him from the start. The performance issues resulting from the track conditions weighed on him too much and kept him from fighting for what he now chooses, which is podiums.

“Unfortunately, this is the weekend where we went by far the worst. We knew what compromises we had to make with the car for this kind of altitude and track. We knew we lost a lot, a lot of performance compared to the other races,” he explained. “Too bad because for a ‘weekend’ when I’m comfortable with the car, I’m attacking…. But unfortunately was there’s not much rhythm. At least I was able to finish the race, learn two races without running and that at least you can learn and have a good race,” he said, before considering how they are going to study this appointment. “We don’t know how many others have had to suffer, but we know we’ve lost a lot here,” he said.
