Legendary world champion, 71, sustains head injury after domestic accident but is stable
Anatoli Karpov is admitted to a hospital in Moscow in an artificial coma. The legendary 71-year-old world chess champion is being treated in the neurology department in intensive care after a domestic accident resulting in a head injury, his daughter Sofia announced on Monday. Karpov also suffered a fracture of his right hip after falling at home.
Karpov’s condition is serious but stable, according to several sources, after it was reported that the Russian teacher was intoxicated when he fell, forcing him to be rushed to hospital and slipped into a coma. “According to my information, Karpov’s condition is stable,” said the president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Arkady Dvorkovich.
The former chess player’s daughter denied that Karpov, currently a deputy of the Russian parliament, was attacked on Saturday at the gates of the State Duma and found unconscious on the street. Various media reported that the world chess champion had been the victim of an attack near the Duma headquarters between 1975 and 1985 and between 1993 and 1999.
