Nerves and stupor in Belgium with Lukaku

Date:

the coach of Belgium, Robert Martinezsays that the absence of “irreplaceable” Romelu Lukaku in World Cup will force his team to change the way they play, but the striker has not yet been ruled out of the tournament, team officials confirmed.

Lukaku is struggling with a hamstring injury after recently returning from two months on the sidelines and is a doubt for the World Cup in Qatar, where Belgium open their tournament against Canada on November 23.

But team doctor Kristof Sas described the latest injury as a “setback” but not a fatal blow to the player’s World Cup chances. “It is not yet a serious problem, but it is a setback for the player himself, his club and the ‘Red Devils,'” Sas quoted HLN.

Bob Martinez spoke last week about Lukaku’s importance to his team and how he covers different attacking positions in the team. Without him, they may have to change their midfield and attacking line.

“At the Red Devils he is irreplaceable,” Martinez told Nieuwsblad. “Every team has irreplaceable players. Look at Argentina with Messi, Croatia with Modric, Brozovic and Kovacic, Spain and Germany also have players like that. That’s how it works. Courtois, De Bruyne and Lukaku are with us. You can’t replace them one on one. If they don’t play, we have to play differently. Without Lukaku, maybe we should play with more attackers.”

Lukaku’s Italian club, Inter Milan, confirmed on Monday that the player has suffered a “myotendinous strain in his left hamstring” and will undergo tests this week to determine the severity of the problem.

The 29-year-old returned to action last week and scored in a 4-0 Champions League win over Viktoria Plzen, also appearing as a substitute in a 3-0 Serie A win over Sampdoria. Saturday
