Red to the competition

Date:

The Spanish championship multiplies by five the exclusions from the Premier League, with a figure close to a record and emphasizes the ease of referees to punish footballers

A third of the League has already been completed and the arbitration controversy continues to eat away at the strict sport. This season, the Spanish referees have been characterized by a very short fuse when it comes to removing footballers from the field, usually after consulting with VAR, viewing a frozen image that may deviate from the real context of the match. In line with this, after the defeat to Real Sociedad, Isco commented that “any image you freeze looks like a crime”, pointing out that if this video arbitrage situation continues, the umpires will be out of work.

With the last red cards for Lewandowski and Pique in Navarra, Rakitic and Nianzou in Seville and Rodrigo Ely in Almería, the League has sent off a total of 59 in 135 games, 56 outfield players and three substitutes. An absolute record figure in European football and it shows how easily the Spanish referees can ban footballers from the playing field.

This outrageous fact becomes even more apparent when compared to the rest of the major leagues in Europe. The closest competition to these figures is the French, with 55 out of 139 matches. Next up would be Serie A, a league that has historically been very tough defensively, but with less than half the number of Reds than the Spaniards, with exactly 27 lockouts in 135 games. It is followed by the Bundesliga with 22 evictions and finally the Premier, with only 11 red cards in 136 matches, the league that allows the most play and in which the most communicative and dialogical referees are with the footballer.

Seville, Betis and Getafe, the most punished

These three teams are by far the clubs that have been sent off the most this season, with a total of six teams. Germán Pezzella, Argentine defender of the Verdiblanco team, has already collected two red cards in the League so far. Girona, meanwhile, is the only Spanish team not to have played with ten this season.

It’s a devastating fact that only the Seville teams, with 12 red teams, top all the Premier’s lockouts in 136 matches, a revealing figure that, perhaps, judging an entry on a frozen ‘frame’ isn’t as objective as possible.
