Sainz: “With a perfect year, it’s possible to beat Verstappen in 2023”

Date:

Carlos Sainz He has left behind his initial difficulties to adapt to a 2022 car in which he cannot drive comfortably. He had to leave his comfort zone, change some things about his style and the car itself to take a step forward in the second half of the year. Since then, after turning things around in one of his most difficult years, the man from Madrid is fully confident that he and the ferrari can take the step they need to defeat Red Bull and Verstappen in 2023. In a press conference before the Brazilian F1 GPsaid the spanish Red Bull and Max they managed to achieve the best ‘pack’ on the grid, but the pure performance of their car, as shown in every qualifying, was very similar to that of Milton Keynes, a good starting point that allows them to look to 2023 which there is hope. Of course, he warned that for this, he and Ferrari must have a “perfect” year to beat the current champion.

HIS COMPLICATED START TO THE SEASON

“It was a challenging season. A very difficult first third, where I struggled with balance and driving style, the car did not adapt well to my style from the start. In the next two thirds I was happier and had more speed, but I had a lot of retirements and reliability problems”.

“I’ve never had as many complications as in 2022, fighting hard to change my driving, a bit out of rhythm at the beginning, and reset the way I drive. I’m proud, because the easy thing is to give up and wait for in the car next year, but look I’m optimistic for 2023 and I’ve made progress.”

HE WANT TO BRING BACK HIS BEST VERSION IN 2023

“Mercedes and Red Bull seem to have improved in the second half of the season. Even though I was very good in the car and had a solid weekend in Mexico, the most I could get was fifth place. I’m happy with the progress we’ve made with the engineers, the way I’ve been able to get back up to speed. I will make sure that next year the same Carlos of 2021 will return ”

WHAT IS FROM MEXICO, SOMETHING “ISOLATED”

“We think that Mexico should be an isolated case because we have not been away from the leading pace in dry conditions this year. We did not get it right away and now we focus on Brazil and Abu Dhabi, two important races before end of the season. We want to pick up the pace and battle between Red Bull and Mercedes. The goal is a solid weekend to prepare us for 2023.

THE CONSTRUCTORS SUB-CHAMPIONSHIP, FIRST GOAL

Now I’m focused on the Brazilian GP and the last one in Abu Dhabi, and for the team it’s the same. These are two very important races because our goal is to fight again with Red Bull and Mercedes for the first places.

FIGHT RED BULL IN 2023

“Unfortunately this year we haven’t been able to keep up with their pace (Red Bull). They have a better package and the driver at the moment is more suitable. I think, in a perfect year, it is possible to beat Max, and also to improve in the early part of the season and in the races. That’s the goal.”

“There are possibilities. Red Bull dominated, but they are not clearly leading in qualifying or race pace. I don’t feel that we are that far away in terms of development and performance, because for example in Austin I was on pole, we were in a 1 -2, we’re not that far away, we need a little more power, a little more downforce, and another step in strategy and race execution. In terms of pure performance, we’re not far away . “
